Obituary
Cathy Maguire-Urban
Board of Directors Chairperson
Ottawa Catholic Child Care Corporation
With sorrow, the family announces that Catherine “Cathy” Elizabeth Urban (née Maguire) passed away surrounded by loved ones at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. Cathy is survived by Frank, her husband of 42 years; daughters Katrin, Emma (Steve Gayton), and son Derek (Autumn Russell); brother Doran Maguire (Patty Knox); and mother Lois Maguire. Predeceased by her father, Buddy Maguire.
Living her entire life in Ottawa, Cathy attended Glebe H.S. before she began working with the Ottawa 67’s and Brian Kilrea. Following that, she worked in the Ottawa General Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry, where she met and began her professional relationship and friendship of over 40 years with Dr. Wayne Quan. She integrated her love for children, fervour for education, and interest in politics by actively engaging in parent-teacher councils; contributing to athletic organisations such as the Barrhaven Girls Basketball Association and South Nepean United Soccer Club; and being elected trustee for multiple wards and terms for the Ottawa Catholic School Board. Over the course of three decades, she held various roles in the Board of Directors for the Ottawa Catholic Child Care Corporation, including being its Chairperson since 2012.
Her time on this earth was too short, but her significant impact during this period was felt and appreciated by so many. She wore her “Mama Bear” badge with pride, and never, ever forgot to send her loved ones a card on their birthdays, at Christmas, or for any other relevant life milestone. Her family wishes her peace in her eternal rest following a brief battle with cancer. They would also like to acknowledge the special attention and care provided by the staff of Queensway Carleton Hospital – in particular Dr. O’Shea, and her nurse, Emma.
A visitation will be held for Cathy at Kelly’s Funeral Home in Barrhaven, from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Saturday, November 25, 2023, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 26. Information on reception to follow. The service will be webcast live for those unable to attend.
For those wishing, In Memoriam donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
